Tips for coloring Addition Color by Number
- For sums to 10, count on from the bigger number: for 3 + 6, start at 6 and count 7, 8, 9.
- For sums to 20, make a ten first: 8 + 5 is 8 + 2 + 3, which is 10 + 3.
- For two-digit sums, add the tens, then the ones, then put them together.
Fun facts about Addition Color by Number
- Adding numbers in any order gives the same sum: 4 + 9 and 9 + 4 are both 13.
- The plus sign was first printed in a math book in Germany in 1489.
- Knowing the pairs that make 10 (1 + 9, 2 + 8, 3 + 7...) makes bigger additions much faster.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Roll two dice and color the space whose answer you rolled, for a game version.
- Write the ten-pairs on a sticky note next to the page as a helper.
- After coloring, ask kids to write one new problem for each answer in the key.
