- Count on out loud: 25, 50, 60, 65, 66.
- For change, count up from the price to the amount paid instead of subtracting.
Fun math facts
- A dime is the smallest US coin but is worth twice as much as the bigger nickel.
- A nickel weighs exactly 5 grams and a penny 2.5 grams, so two pennies weigh the same as one nickel.
- A quarter has 119 ridges around its edge; dimes have 118.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Set up a pretend store with price tags under a dollar and real coins to pay with.
- Empty a coin jar and sort, count and roll the coins together.
- Give an allowance in mixed coins and let your child count it each week.

Frequently asked questions
Which coins should a first grader know?
Penny (1 cent), nickel (5 cents), dime (10 cents) and quarter (25 cents). Knowing that a dime is smaller than a nickel but worth more is the classic first grade hurdle.
How do kids count mixed coins?
Sort them from the biggest value to the smallest, then count on: 25, 50, 60, 65, 66. The counting worksheets start with the coins already sorted and then mix them up.
How do you teach making change?
Count up from the price to the amount paid. For a 64 cent toy paid with a dollar: 64, 65 (penny), 75 (dime), 100 (quarter), so the change is 36 cents.
