Tips for division worksheets
- Say every division fact as a multiplication question: 42 divided by 6 means 6 times what is 42?
- In long division, line up the digits in columns; graph paper or wide spacing stops most mistakes.
- Check the answer by multiplying back and adding the remainder.
Fun math facts
- The division sign (รท) is called an obelus and was first used for division in a 1659 algebra book.
- You can divide a number by 1 and get the same number back, but you can never divide by zero.
- In France, long division is written with the divisor to the right of the dividend, not on the left.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Share real objects (crackers, blocks) among plates before doing the sharing worksheets.
- Play 'remainder race': roll two dice, divide the bigger total by the smaller, and score the remainder.
- Use the divide-by-n worksheets in the same order as the times tables were learned.

Frequently asked questions
What grade learns division?
Third graders learn division as the opposite of multiplication, with facts to 100. Fourth grade brings long division by 1-digit numbers and fifth grade by 2-digit numbers.
How do I teach division facts?
Start from the times tables: 56 divided by 7 asks '7 times what is 56?'. Fact families and the divide-by-n worksheets here build exactly that link.
What does the R in 3 R2 mean?
R stands for remainder, the part left over when a number does not divide evenly. 17 divided by 5 is 3 R2 because 5 x 3 = 15 and 2 is left.
Where is the long division method explained?
The long division worksheets use the standard US bracket layout. The steps are divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, and repeat; the answer keys show the quotient and remainder for checking.
