Handwriting Worksheets
Updated October 2026 · 37 free printables
Free printable handwriting practice for kindergarten and first grade: uppercase and lowercase alphabet charts with stroke order, the days of the week, the months of the year, color words, number words, sight words, kind sentences, the quick brown fox pangram and a write-your-name page.
Every word sits on 4-line handwriting paper with a blue top line, a dashed midline and a red baseline. Kids trace the dark dashed word, trace it once more in light gray, then write it in the space left on the line. Looking for single letters? The letter tracing pages have one sheet per letter from A to Z.

Tips for coloring Handwriting Worksheets
- Check the grip first: pencil held between thumb and pointer finger, resting on the middle finger.
- Leave a finger space between words; let your child lay a finger on the line after each word.
- Short, daily practice beats long sessions; stop while it is still fun.
Fun facts about Handwriting Worksheets
- "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" has been used to test typewriters and fonts for more than 100 years because it uses all 26 letters.
- The days Sunday and Monday are named after the sun and the moon, and Saturday after the Roman god Saturn.
- The names of September to December come from Latin numbers 7 to 10, because the old Roman year started in March.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Hang the days-of-the-week page by the calendar and trace today's name every morning.
- Write a short note to a grandparent using words from the kind sentences page.
- Turn color words into a hunt: after tracing a word, find three things in the room with that color.

Frequently asked questions
How do I use these handwriting worksheets?
Have your child trace the dark word slowly from the green dot, then the light copy, then write it alone in the free space. Five to ten minutes a day works better than one long session.
Which page should we start with?
Start with the uppercase and lowercase alphabet charts. Once single letters are easy, move on to short words like the sight words and color words, then to full sentences.
Can my child practice writing their own name?
Yes. On the Write Your Name page, write the name in highlighter on the first line so your child can trace it, then let them copy it on the lines below and draw a self-portrait.
Why is there a dashed middle line?
The midline shows how tall small letters like a, e and o should be. Tall letters touch the top line and letters like g and y dip below the red baseline to the bottom line.
