Draw What Comes Next: Growing Patterns
Five drawing pattern rows (one more dot each time, a tower one block taller, stairs with one more step, a flower with one more petal and one more ring). Kids work out the rule of each row and draw the next picture themselves instead of circling an answer. The answer key on page 2 shows the next picture in red.

About this game
Five drawing pattern rows (one more dot each time, a tower one block taller, stairs with one more step, a flower with one more petal and one more ring). Kids work out the rule of each row and draw the next picture themselves instead of circling an answer. The answer key on page 2 shows the next picture in red. It suits ages 4 to 6, and little ones can count the pictures with a finger.
Tips for using it
- Read the row out loud together before drawing; the rhythm gives the rule away.
- Ask what changed between two neighbors in the row, then whether it changes the same way each time.
- Check the answer key together, then invent one more row on the back.
Printing tips
Download the PDF and print at 100% (or “fit to page” on A4). Page 1 is the game and page 2 is the answer key with the answers in red; print just page 1 if you want to keep the answers for checking. The PNG shows page 1 only. Free for personal, family and classroom use.
