About this worksheet
A free printable order by length: shortest to longest worksheet with an answer key. All the objects start at the dashed line. Number them in order from shortest to longest. First graders can do it on their own once they know the strategy at the top of the page. Measure a few things at home too, like a spoon, a shoe or a toy car.
On this sheet
Write 1 for the shortest, then 2 and 3 for the longest. Write 1 for the shortest, then 2 and 3 for the longest. Write 1 for the shortest, then 2, 3 and 4 for the longest.
Tips for using it
- Line the object up with the 0 on the ruler, not with the end of the ruler.
- Guess first, then measure: kids get better at estimating with every try.
- Before using a ruler, check that the end of the object sits exactly on the 0 line.
- Say the unit with every answer: 4 is not finished, 4 inches is.
Printing tips
Download the PDF and print at 100% (or “fit to page” on A4). Page 1 is the worksheet and page 2 is the answer key with the answers in red; print just page 1 if you want to keep the answers for checking. The PNG shows page 1 only. Free for personal, family and classroom use.
