About this worksheet
Four colored-square patterns on graph paper: a red staircase, a row of pine trees, an orange checkerboard and diamonds with dots. The first part of each row is done; kids continue the pattern to the end. The answer key is on page 2. First graders can do it on their own once they know the strategy at the top of the page.
Tips for using it
- Copy one square at a time and check where each line enters and leaves the square before you draw.
- Draw lightly in pencil first; when the whole picture is in place, trace over it and color it.
- Turn the example picture upside down for a challenge: it stops your brain from guessing and makes you copy what you really see.
Printing tips
Download the PDF and print at 100% (or “fit to page” on A4). Page 1 is the worksheet and page 2 is the answer key with the answers in red; print just page 1 if you want to keep the answers for checking. The PNG shows page 1 only. Free for personal, family and classroom use.
