Word Ladders for Kids
Updated November 2026 · 12 free printables
A word ladder turns one word into another by changing just one letter at a time: cat, hat, bat, bag, bug, mug, rug. These printable word ladders start with three-letter words and a picture on every rung (kindergarten), add short clues (first grade) and end with four-letter ladders like game to cake and sand to tent (second grade).
On the easier ladders a yellow box shows which letter changes, and each clue says whether to change the first, middle or last letter. The answer key on page 2 shows the whole ladder. There is also a page of four mini ladders that turn a cat into a dog and a pig into a hen.

Read the clue, look at which letter is marked to change, and try sounds in that spot until you make a real word that fits the clue. Then that word is the start of the next step.
What skills do word ladders build?
Phonics and spelling: children have to hear the difference between hat and hot, and notice that only one sound changed. They also build vocabulary through the clues.
What age are word ladders for?
Picture ladders with three-letter words work from kindergarten. Ladders with four-letter words and word clues suit first and second graders.
Who invented word ladders?
The writer Lewis Carroll, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, invented the puzzle and called it Doublets.
