Tips for parents and teachers
- Before reading, look at the picture and the title together and guess what the passage will be about.
- Ask your child to underline the sentence in the passage that proves each answer.
- Talk about the story afterwards: what was the problem, how was it solved, and what would your child have done?
Did you know?
- Reading the same short text two or three times is one of the best ways to build reading speed and smooth, expressive reading.
- "Who, what, where, when, why and how" are often called the 5 Ws and H; reporters use the same questions to write news stories.
- Children learn many new words from reading and being read to, because books use words that rarely come up in everyday talk.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Turn a fiction passage into a puppet show with paper characters.
- After a nonfiction passage, make a mini poster with three facts your child learned.
- Keep finished worksheets in a folder and let your child reread old favorites to see how easy they have become.
How to print
Click Download PDF and print at 100% on US Letter or A4 paper. Page 1 is the worksheet and page 2 is the answer key, so choose “page 1” in the print dialog if you only want the practice page. Every worksheet is free for home, homeschool and classroom use, so print as many copies as you need.
Frequently asked questions
How long are the reading passages?
Kindergarten stories have five short decodable sentences of about 25 to 35 words. Grade 1 passages run about 60 to 85 words, grade 2 about 95 to 125 words and grade 3 about 150 to 175 words.
Are the stories and facts original?
Yes. Every story and nonfiction passage was written for this site, and the facts in the nonfiction pages (bees, penguins, the moon, the water cycle, blue whales, the planets and more) were checked against standard science references.
How should my child use a reading comprehension worksheet?
Read the passage once for fun, then a second time slowly. Answer the questions one by one and go back to the text to find each answer; underlining the sentence that proves an answer is a great habit.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF shows the correct choices circled in red, the missing words filled in, the right order of events and a sample answer for each written question.
