Sight Word Worksheets
Updated November 2026 · 92 free printables
A free printable worksheet for every word on the Dolch pre-primer and primer lists, the sight words most children meet first in preschool and kindergarten. Each page works on one word in six short steps: read it in big letters, trace it on handwriting lines, color the hollow letters, find it among look-alike words, spell it, and read a little sentence with a picture to color.
The pages are in color and no two are the same: the exercises change order, the find-it game is sometimes a word grid and sometimes a bunch of balloons, and the spelling task switches between missing letters, letter tiles and word shape boxes. Every sentence is our own and uses mostly other sight words, so children read real text from day one. Page 2 of each PDF is the answer key.

Tips for parents and teachers
- Say the word, spell it out loud, then say it again ("the, t-h-e, the") while your child points at each letter.
- Let your child color the three stars in the Read it box only after saying the word, one star each time.
- Keep finished pages in a folder and reread the sentences from old pages once a week; quick wins build confidence.
- If a word keeps getting mixed up with a look-alike (was and saw, on and no), practice the two side by side.
Did you know?
- The pre-primer list has 40 Dolch words and the primer list has 52, so these worksheets cover 92 of the 220 Dolch service words.
- Many very common words, like said, was and the, do not follow the usual phonics patterns, which is why they are practiced as sight words.
- The word "the" is the most common word in written English.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Make a "word of the day" spot on the fridge and hang the finished worksheet there.
- After the worksheet, go on a hunt for the word in a picture book and count how many times you find it.
- Ask your child to draw a new picture for the sentence and tell you what happens next.
How to print
Click Download PDF and print at 100% on US Letter or A4 paper. Page 1 is the worksheet and page 2 is the answer key, so choose “page 1” in the print dialog if you only want the practice page. Every worksheet is free for home, homeschool and classroom use, so print as many copies as you need.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a sight word worksheet?
Read the word aloud together first, then let your child work through the numbered boxes in order. Point at the word every time it shows up and ask your child to say it. One page a day is plenty.
Which sight words should my child learn first?
Start with the pre-primer list: words like the, and, I, see, can and you appear in almost every early reader. Move on to the primer worksheets once your child reads most pre-primer words without stopping to think.
Why are some of the find-it words spelled wrong?
On purpose. Words like "adn" or "bnt" look a lot like the real word, so your child has to check every letter instead of guessing from the first one. That careful look is what makes a word stick.
Is there an answer key?
Yes. Page 2 of every PDF shows the circled words, the colored balloons or tiles, the missing letters and the word in the sentence. Print only page 1 if you want to keep the answers for yourself.
