About this worksheet
The hardest sheet in the set: four-digit dividends from 1675 to 9912, two-digit divisors from 11 to 24, and six of the nine leave a remainder (3076 by 19 is 161 R17, 1879 by 19 is 98 R17, 6946 by 11 is 631 R5). The instruction gives the strategy, round the divisor to the nearest ten to estimate each quotient digit, so 19 is treated as 20 and 23 as 20, with a correction when the estimate overshoots. Three problems come out evenly (9912 by 21 is 472, 8418 by 23 is 366, 8016 by 24 is 334). Fifth grade, thirty minutes or more; a sheet for after the no-remainder page, not instead of it.
Tips for using it
- Round each divisor and write the estimate above the bracket before touching the digits.
- When a subtraction gives a number bigger than the divisor, the quotient digit was one too small.
- Save 1675 by 18 for last: the first estimate of 9 is right and the remainder is only 1.
- Check two answers by multiplying back and adding the remainder; checking all nine takes too long.
