Free printable writing worksheets for preschool to 3rd grade, in the order children learn to write: first tracing lines and shapes to warm up the hand, then numbers and the letters of the alphabet with numbered start dots and arrows for the stroke order, then whole words and sentences on handwriting lines, and finally cursive.
Every page is a free PDF for US Letter and A4. Letters use the simple ball-and-stick manuscript style taught in most US preschools and kindergartens, and every tracing row fades from a model letter to dashed letters to start dots only, so children finish each page by writing on their own.

Tips for parents and teachers
- Check the pencil grip first: a relaxed tripod grip (thumb, index and middle finger) makes every letter easier.
- Say the stroke out loud while tracing ("down, up and around"), so the movement and the shape are learned together.
- Start each letter at the green dot. Starting in the right place matters more than a perfectly neat line.
- Use a crayon or a thick pencil for the youngest writers; thin pencils tire small hands quickly.
Did you know?
- Tracing lines and shapes before letters is called pre-writing: it trains the same hand movements letters need.
- Most letters of the alphabet are built from only a few strokes: straight lines, slants, circles and curves.
- Writing a letter by hand helps children remember it better than typing it, because the hand learns the shape too.
- Cursive was designed so the pen hardly leaves the paper, which made writing faster with old dip pens.
Fun ways to use your printables
- Slide a worksheet into a plastic sleeve and trace with a dry-erase marker, so one page can be used again and again.
- Practice the letter of the week in sand, shaving foam or salt on a tray before writing it on paper.
- Let your child write the shopping list or a short note for the fridge using the letters already learned.
- Trace the letters of your child's name first: it is the word children most want to write.

In what order should my child use these worksheets?
Start with line and shape tracing (straight, curved and zigzag lines) to build pencil control, then number and letter tracing A to Z. Once a child can write the letters, move on to tracing words and short sentences. Cursive usually comes in 2nd or 3rd grade.
At what age do children start tracing letters?
Most children are ready for line tracing around age 3 and for letter tracing between 4 and 5, when they can hold a crayon or pencil with their fingers instead of their fist.
