About this worksheet
Each of the four problems puts two objects above a shared 15-centimeter ruler and asks for both lengths and the difference: the key is 11 cm and the pencil 9, so the key is 2 cm longer; the caterpillar is 10 and the worm 3, a difference of 7; the marker is 9 and the leaf 3, a difference of 6; the carrot is 13 and the fish 8, a difference of 5. That is twelve numbers to write in all. Page 2 shows them. It is a second-grade page of about ten minutes that joins measuring to subtraction, which is the step most ruler pages leave out. Writing both lengths before subtracting keeps the arithmetic separate from the reading.
Tips for using it
- Have your child write the two lengths first and draw a small minus sign between them.
- Check each difference by counting the centimeter marks between the two ends.
- Ask which pair has the biggest difference and which the smallest.
- Measure two real pencils and find how much longer one is.
