About this worksheet
The rulers on this page carry the small quarter-inch marks, and the instruction shows how to write an answer like 2 ¼, 2 ½ or 2 ¾. The pencil measures 3 ¼ inches, the paintbrush 1 ½, the marker exactly 5, the crayon 1 ¾ and the worm 2 ¾. Three lengths land on quarter marks, one on a half and one on a whole inch, so the child cannot assume every answer has a fraction. Page 2 lists the five lengths. It is a third-grade page of ten to twelve minutes that follows the half-inch sheets. Counting the small marks past the last whole inch, one, two, three, and naming them ¼, ½, ¾ is the method to teach.
Tips for using it
- Have your child label the four marks inside one inch on the first ruler: ¼, ½, ¾, 1.
- Ask which object is the only one with a whole-inch length.
- Measure a real crayon to the nearest quarter inch and compare with 1 ¾.
- Put the five answers in order from shortest to longest on a line marked in quarters.
