About this worksheet
Six Christmas word problems for second grade with two-digit numbers: ornaments hung on the tree, gingerbread cookies sold at the bakery, red and green bulbs on a string of lights, stamps for the cards. Three stories add and three subtract, so children have to read for the question instead of spotting a pattern. Answers with the key on page 2. Second graders usually finish it in 10 to 15 minutes. Red, green and gold make a classic Christmas palette.
On this sheet
space and write the answer. The elves wrapped 55 gifts in the morning and 32 gifts in the afternoon. How many gifts did they wrap that day? A string of lights has 50 bulbs. 17 bulbs are red and the rest are green. How many bulbs are green? The bakery made 49 gingerbread cookies. 17 of them were sold before lunch. How many cookies are left? There are 30 candy canes in the red jar and 38 in the green jar.
Tips for using it
- Check each answer by adding it back to the number taken away.
- Count back on your fingers or the number line for the hardest facts.
- Have your child say each fact out loud while writing the answer.
- Make a three-page packet per child: one word search, one maze and one math or reading page at their level. It fills a quiet 20 minutes.
