About this worksheet
Nine problems in the bracket layout, no scaffold, all without remainder, so the last subtraction must leave 0 and a child knows at once if something went wrong. Dividends run from 1424 to 9632 with divisors 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 9. Two answers have four digits (7962 by 3 is 2654, 5756 by 2 is 2878), the rest three, and 9632 by 8 gives 1204 with a 0 to place. It is a fourth-grade page for the week after the scaffolded sheets, when the steps are known and the goal is to keep four digits of work lined up; twenty to thirty minutes.
Tips for using it
- Rule light columns with a pencil so the digits stay under each other.
- Estimate first: 5787 by 9 is close to 5400 by 9, so the answer should start with 6.
- Circle any final remainder that is not 0; that problem needs a second look.
- Time the sheet once now and once in a month to see the steps speed up.
