About this worksheet
Each piggy bank is drawn with its coins visible on its side, already sorted from quarters down to pennies, and a Total box with a cent sign underneath. Bank 1 holds two dimes, two nickels and a penny (31 cents), bank 4 holds three quarters and two dimes (95 cents), bank 6 holds two dimes, a nickel and three pennies (28 cents). The instruction says to start with the quarters, then dimes, nickels and pennies, which the sorted layout makes natural. Page 2 shows the six totals. Second graders need about ten minutes. The pig pictures make this a friendlier first page than plain rows of coins, with the same arithmetic.
Tips for using it
- Have your child find the bank with the most money before counting any, then check.
- Ask how many more cents bank 4 needs to reach a dollar.
- Count bank 3 two ways: left to right, and by adding quarters, nickels and pennies separately.
- Start a real coin jar and count it the same way once a week.
