About this worksheet
The totals climb and the coin counts grow: "I have 6 coins. Together they make 100¢. I have no pennies. One of my coins is a dime" and "I have 5 coins. Together they make 41¢. One of my coins is a quarter." A coin bank at the top shows the four coins with values, and children draw or name the coins in the box. Each riddle has a single solution, so a wrong combination that reaches the total will be off by one coin somewhere. Third graders take about fifteen minutes, less with real coins. Page 2 draws out the exact coins for every riddle.
Tips for using it
- Start every riddle by placing the coins the clues name, then fill in the rest.
- Count the coins in your answer; it must match the number in the riddle.
- Try to solve riddle 2 without touching any coins.
- Make a riddle with 5 coins that total exactly 75 cents.
