About this worksheet
Each of the six items shows a price tag and a $1 bill, and asks for two things: the change in cents and a drawing of that change with the fewest coins. For the 29¢ item the change is 71¢, shown as two quarters, two dimes and a penny; for 85¢ it is 15¢, a dime and a nickel; for the 7¢ item it is 93¢, which takes three quarters, a dime, a nickel and three pennies. Page 2 writes each amount and draws the coins, quarters first. Second graders need fifteen minutes. The page joins two skills, counting up to a dollar and choosing coins, which is exactly what happens at a real register.
Tips for using it
- Have your child find the change by counting up from the price to 100 before drawing anything.
- Draw the coins as circles with the value inside: 25, 10, 5, 1.
- Check the 7¢ item carefully; 93¢ needs eight coins even at the fewest.
- Act out one purchase with a play dollar and let your child hand back the coins.
