About this worksheet
Six stories ask the child to count coins in their head or draw them: Luke's 3 one-dollar bills and a quarter against a $3 toy ($3.25, yes), whether Emma's dollar covers a 19¢ eraser and a 36¢ pencil (yes, 45¢ left), 2 dimes a day for 2 days (40¢), change from 3 quarters for a 28¢ juice box (47¢), Max's quarter, dime and penny against Leo's 6 dimes (Leo, 60¢ to 36¢) and a jar with a quarter and 2 dimes (45¢). Two stories need a yes or no as well as a number. Page 2 gives the answers with cent and dollar signs. Second graders need fifteen minutes; drawing the coins is allowed and often faster.

- Have your child draw small circles labeled 25, 10, 5 or 1 for each story before adding.
- For story 2, add the two prices first, then compare with 100.
- Ask what Owen's 3 quarters are worth before finding the change.
- Write the answers with a cent sign or a dollar sign, matching the key.
