About this worksheet
The child first colors every fifth number yellow, which fills two columns, the 5s column and the 10s column, and then circles every tenth number, which lands only in the right-hand column. The overlap is the lesson: every number said when counting by 10s was already colored, because every 10 is also a 5. The questions underneath ask what every circled number ends in (0), what every yellow number ends in (5 or 0), how many numbers were colored (20) and how many were circled (10). Page 2 shows the finished chart and answers. First graders need about ten minutes and a yellow crayon.
On this sheet
you say when you count by 10s. Every circled number ends in . Every yellow number ends in 5 or.
Tips for using it
- Count aloud by 5s while coloring and by 10s while circling, so the voice matches the hand.
- Ask before circling whether any circle will land on a white box.
- Count the yellow boxes in one column and double it for question 2.
- Use nickels and dimes on the table to show that two 5s make a 10.
